From Nykara tomb, Thebes: False door relief -- Nykara with servant
Family members were expected to make appropriate offerings on behalf of their deceased relative after his or her death. The false door was added to tomb decoration starting during the Archaic Period (c3200-2680 BC). It represented a door through which the deceased could emerge to inspect and partake of the offerings left by followers and family. Ny-Kau-Re, "King's Grain Overseer", is depicted with a servant coming to do just that.
