The Virgin Mary with Indian Donors, from La Paz
The Spanish imported master artists from Spain who then oversaw workshops of native artists who were taught to produce artwork in the prevailing European Baroque style. The depiction is remarkable in that, despite their forced conversion to Christianity by the Spanish, the Bolivian natives persisted in the 18th century in certain cultural traditions such as ceremonial dress.
